Our client, Sightline (Sweden), in cooperation with Banverket (The Swedish National Rail Administration), Bombardier, Uppsala University and VTI has developed the 3D graphics engine and the presentation graphics for the train simulator SST. Almost all the low-poly modeling was done by Vayersoft. Our team has modeled the train and a part of the railways with surroundings, including terrain with vegetation, embankments with contact lines, signal systems and infrastructure.

Open national platform
The initiative for the project to create a national platform for simulation of rail traffic came from VTI and Banverket. VINNOVA were co-sponsors of the project.
The goal of the project was to develop a common platform for railway simulation for several different application areas. Examples of these areas include research of the locomotive engineer’s information environment, education and continued training of engineers, evaluation of new technologies and support for railway planning.
SST is licensed under the framework for BSD licenses, which means that the source code is free and open.
The system
The system allows automatic generation of railways from the XML basic data retrieved from BIS (Banverket's Rail Information System). 3D models of railways with their surroundings can be generated procedurally. Terrain with vegetation, embankments with contact lines, signal systems and infrastructure is generated using basic data from BIS.
Detailed railways
Extensive, detailed and still low-poly 3D models of railways can be generated on the fly from prepared basic data. This allows for quick planning and visualization of new rail expansions. The graphics system uses the 3D technology OpenSceneGraph.
